A guard is a cover over the gutter that lets water in and keeps debris out. No guard keeps everything out, and none ends maintenance; the right one is the one that matches what falls on your roof.
The main kinds
- Screens (perforated metal or plastic). Stop large leaves; small debris and pine needles work through the holes or lie on top.
- Mesh and micro-mesh (metal mesh in a frame). The finer the mesh, the smaller the debris it stops, including pine needles, seeds and roof grit. Fine mesh can hold a film of pollen that needs brushing off.
- Reverse-curve hoods. Water follows the curved lip into the gutter while leaves slide off the edge. Large leaves shed well; in very hard rain some water can overshoot the curve.
- Foam and brush inserts. Sit inside the trough. Cheap and easy to fit; they collect debris themselves and come out to be cleaned.
Matched to metro Atlanta trees
The City of Atlanta measured 45.7% of its land under tree canopy in 2023. Over most roofs here, that means both pine needles and broad leaves:
- Pines call for fine mesh; needles pass through coarse screens and lodge in brush inserts.
- Oaks, maples, tulip poplars shed well off hoods and mesh.
- Sweetgum balls and acorns roll off most covers but jam open gutters and downspout outlets.
What a guard does not do
It does not fix a gutter that is pitched wrong, undersized or pulling away, and it does not stop ice from forming in a hard freeze. Debris still builds on top and in the downspouts; a guarded gutter still needs a look and, now and then, a cleaning.
Buying guards at home
Guards are often sold at a visit to the house. Under the Federal Trade Commission's Cooling-Off Rule, a purchase of $25 or more made at your home can be canceled until midnight of the third business day after the sale, and the seller has to give you the cancellation form. Ask for the warranty in writing: what it covers (the product, the installation, clogging), whether it transfers to a buyer of the house, and whether the guards are fastened under the shingles, which can matter to your roof warranty.
